The problem that we have with a victim mentality is that we forget to see the blessings of the day. Because of this, our spirit is poisoned instead of nourished. - Steve Maraboli
Victim ideologies inherently create and promote a culture of fear. Instead of individuals stating their skills, abilities, and even life are worthy to stand on their own the oppressed bemoan their fate and instead appeal to their 'oppressors' through moral condemnation.
There is always some truth in these ideologies, otherwise the message wouldn't resonate. Women get raped, unarmed blacks get shot by cops, homosexual's get accosted by rabid Christians. These things really happen. No shit. The problem is that in our time, they are the exception, not the rule.
Social institutions reinforce the individual's feelings of victimization.
I just pulled up CNN, and this is what showed up:
Apparently one in four adults is anti-semetic. I smell bullshit.
I clicked into the article and we see that this study was conducted by the anti-defamation league, which is a Jewish heritage institution and does great work on a number of issues, but in this case it's goal is to reinforce the feelings of victimization.
Here is the study. Here is an example the questions asked "Jews are more loyal to Israel than to [this country/the countries they live in]". This is not an objective study. Answering yes to this question does not make you anti-semitic.
Here is how this works:
1) Incident occurs
2) Media aggrandizes isolated incident
3) The incident reverberates through the echo chamber of social media.
4) Incident is viewed as evidence of systemic societal issue (even though objective data does not reflect that)
5) The individual's feelings of victimization increase
Our feelings of victimization reinforce a dependence on the structures of civilization - the government, police, and military to keep us safe from the existential threat of the 'other'.
The traits that kept humans alive as hunter gathers are the same traits keeping humans from advancing to the next level. Humans are amazing at pattern recognition. Our brains automatically associate traits with characteristics. In doing so we categorize other humans by generally superficial traits - man, woman, black, white, tall, short, et al; in turn associating them with characteristics thug, rich, handsome, ugly... We are also self-aware, so we categorize ourselves for everyone else. If that group that we identify with is oppressed, we're somehow oppressed, even if we haven't really felt this oppression.
The Will To Power
Civilization defines itself through the repression of the individual's desires. It offers protection and inclusion at the sacrifice of freedom. The system of civilization requires that people be lumped together into demographics. It is a means of social control. If an individual has certain superficial characteristics (race, gender, and sexual preference) they are associated with that group.
Individuals, and groups, in any hierarchical situation will vie for power within those structures. The main structure (civilization, government) stays in place to act as the power broker, and the various groups attempt to make gains relative to each other.
In accepting the ideology of victimization, we choose to live in fear. We choose to reinforce the states position of power by appealing for power relative to other groups. We choose to accept our fear of the 'other' instead of our faith in ourselves and our own abilities. We choose tribalism instead of advancement. We choose our primate brains and emotions instead of logic.
